New York Announces Shark Fin Ban
This week, New York State legislators introduced a bill prohibiting the possession, sale, trade or distribution of shark fins.
The bill, which is sponsored by State Assembly Members Alan Maisel, Linda B. Rosenthal, and Grace Meng, anticipates the banning of shark fins in New York State as soon as 2013.
Similar legislation is currently on the table in Virginia, Illinois and Maryland. Within the past year, shark fin bans have been enacted in California, Oregon, Hawaii, and Washington, thereby shutting off the shark fin trade along the entire US Pacific Coastline.
