Federal Shark Fin Ban Introduced in Canada

WildAid welcomes the news that Canadian Member of Parliament Fin Donnelly announced federal legislation banning the trade in shark fin. This is the first import ban initiated by a national government in the western hemisphere.

Oakville Unanimously Votes to Ban Shark Fin - Over 3.5 Million Canadians Have Now Taken Action on Issue

WildAid Canada welcomes the news that the Town of Oakville has, by a vote of 7-0 last night, banned the sale and possession of shark fin and related products.

The shark fin ban was proposed this June and received unanimous support from the Oakville Council, who agreed to draft and vote on a new bylaw by the end of the year. The Council’s decision to adopt a motion to draft a banning bylaw sparked confusion among many reporters, who misconstrued this as Oakville’s official passing of the shark fin ban this July.

Manta Rays receive international protection from the Convention on Migratory Species of Wild Animals

WildAid applauds the recent listing of the giant manta ray (Manta birostris) under Appendix I and II in the Convention on Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS), an international treaty organization concerned with conserving migratory species and habitats on a global scale. Listed on November 25, 2011, member countries are now obligated to provide strict national protections for giant manta rays and their key habitats.

Two More Municipalities Ban Shark Fin in Canada

WildAid Canada welcomes the news that London and Pickering, Ontario are the latest municipalities to act on banning the sale and possession of shark fin.

Last night, London Council voted unanimously to call for a ban on shark fin products. At the same time, Pickering Council passed a ban into law by a margin of 5 to 1.

The Peninsula Hotels Chain Takes a Stand Against Shark Fins

The Peninsula Hotels chain, Asia's oldest hotel company, will contribute to growing global efforts to reduce the demand for shark fin products by banning the consumption of shark fin at its hotel restaurants and banquet operations, effective January 1, 2012.
