China’s State Council Makes Historic Decision to Protect Sharks

In China, the Government Offices Administration of the State Council has reportedly agreed to stop serving shark fin soup at official banquets, to take effect in the next 1-3 years. The administration was responding to a proposal submitted by 30 officials from the National People’s Congress, spearheaded by delegate Ding Liguo, who announced the news on his microblog on Friday, according to Global Times.

Illinois Shark Fin Ban is Signed into Law

Today, with the signature of Governor Pat Quinn, Illinois becomes the fourth state in the continental US, and the second largest, to ban the sale, trade, possession, and distribution of shark fins.

New York Moves One Step Closer to Banning Shark Fins

In New York, a shark fin ban (A.7707a/S.6431) passed through the Senate Environmental Conservation Committee by a vote of 13-1 on Tuesday.

The bipartisan state legislation is sponsored by Assembly Members Alan Maisel (D-Brooklyn) and Grace Meng (D-Flushing) and Senator Mark Grisanti (R-Buffalo) in the Senate.
